What is UCBAAPT?

The Underserved Coalition for Bay Area Advanced Practice Training (UCBAAPT) is a training program to prepare advanced practice nursing (APN) students from varying graduate-level nursing speciality programs within the UCSF School of Nursing, to deliver primary care (including prenatal care as applicable), address social determinants of health, health equity, and needs of medically disadvantaged populations in the Bay Area.

What is the mission of UCBAAPT?

UCBAAPT’s mission is to improve healthcare and promote health equity for medically disadvantaged populations and to provide education and clinical practice training for advanced practice nursing students.

What is the purpose of UCBAAPT's academic-clinical partnerships?

UCBAAPT expands on the successful academic-clinical partnership between the UCSF School of Nursing and San Francisco Bay Area community-based healthcare organizations.

These partnerships were created through the shared mission to improve healthcare and promote health equity for medically disadvantaged populations and to provide education and clinical practice training for advanced practice nursing (APN) students.

What are the terms and conditions of a UCBAAPT Scholar?

*UCBAAPT Scholar Eligibility:

  • Full-time enrollment in the second year of their respective graduate-level nursing specialty program
  • In good academic standing, with a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Commitment in working with medically disadvantaged populations in primary care (including prenatal care)

During the program, the UCBAAPT Scholar will:

  • Be enrolled full-time in the second year of their respective graduate-level nursing speciality program
  • Be in good academic standing with a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA), which must be maintained to continue to receive funding
  • Complete immersive clinical in primary care (including prenatal care) in the community (as part of your clinical hours)
  • Attend Scholar Series sessions per quarter 
  • Attend career and professional development opportunities (e.g., career fairs, mixers, etc.)

 Following graduation, the UCBAAPT Scholar will:

  • Be eligible to work in the United States. 
  • Commit to serving medically disadvantaged populations in primary care (including prenatal care)
  • Obtain NPI # post-graduation
  • Provide employment info post-graduation
  • Respond to post-graduation surveys and/or engagement
  • Return as mentor and/or preceptor for future Scholars (as appropriate)

How are UCBAAPT funds impact selected Scholars’ current financial aid / funding sources?

Selected UCBAAPT Scholars must be full-time registered students to receive these payments. Should Scholars receive any other grant/scholarship/funding source, which covers full resident tuition and fees, then their awarded UCBAAPT funds may be forfeited. If this award affects the Scholars’ current financial aid, such as student loans they may have taken through the UCSF Student Financial Services Office, that office will contact them directly. In case Scholars have not already completed the paperwork necessary to activate a direct deposit account, they must go to the UCSF Student Financial Services Office website for instructions.
